![]() The controls below those selections change depending on which one that you choose. The Exciter module is where you can select to strike, pick, or bow the string. After clicking on that tab, you are presented with four modules of controls: Exciter, String, Filter and Body. I will start with the Synth tab first since that is where the sound originates from. The tabs are labeled Play, Synth, Effects and Browse. Below those controls are tabs in each layer to navigate to many other functions. You’re also able to tune, pan, mute, solo, and set the level separately for each layer. Within each layer you have a sound source that can mimic the sound of strings being struck, picked, or bowed. ![]() There are two sound source layers which can be stacked together or split. I was very impressed by the general sound of VS-3 right away, and there is a generous number of excellent presets to choose from. You can also create a new pack and save your own presets within it. Then you’ll see the packs along the left and the contents of the selected pack towards the middle of the Manager screen. To get there, you just click the down-arrow icon. This is also where you can navigate to the Bank Manager. Over to the right are other browsing controls to skim through the presets by clicking the horizontal arrows, and you’re able to narrow the preset choices by category and/or tone quality (acoustic, electric or synthetic). As long as you see the little keyboard there, you can use the left/right arrow keys to skip through the presets. After you’ve clicked on that menu to see the presets, it will display a small keyboard icon on the menu itself. Clicking on the preset name opens a drop-down menu for you to select from the other presets in that particular pack. Normally you’d have the Factory Library of presets loaded first by default, but if you have other Packs (the AAS format for a collection of presets) you can get to them in the upper-left of the display. They are in separate categories such as bass, sweeps, clavinets, percussion, effects, keys, plucks and guitars. VS-3 uses a challenge/response copy protection system.Īfter loading it into my DAW I proceeded to see what the presets had to offer. AAS recommends an Intel i5 (circa 2012) or better CPU. To install on the PC you’ll need Windows 7+ and for the Mac you’ll need 10.7+. ![]() It is available in 64-bit VST2, VST3, AU, AAX and Standalone formats. This plugin is all about physical modeling, so there are no wavetables or samples to be found here. There are over 800 quality presets to select from. Fretting and damper settings change the nature of the sound, and then it can be affected by filters, envelopes and effects. Using its dual-layer structure you can select from a bowed (BSO), plucked (PSO) or hammered (HSO) string oscillator for each of the layers. Instead of the average oscillators you see in most synthesizer plugins, String Studio VS-3 (from now on I will refer to it as VS-3) features an alternate approach using a few different types of synthesis for its sound sources. For this review I wanted to cover their latest version of String Studio. Some of those plugins include Ultra Analog VA-2, Strum GS-2 and Lounge Lizard EP-4. Since then the company has created many music software products of considerable quality. The developer AAS (Applied Acoustic Systems) was founded in Montreal back in 1998. String Studio from AAS is a rich-sounding string emulation that has several clever tricks up its sleeve – a nifty virtual instrument package with a bow on it.
